Whether you ascribe to this philosphy or not, you must admit, history is pretty darn interesting. And, nestled in what is now a quaint tourist town, we have an area that is rich in fascinating history. 

Wingfield Heritage House Museum

Address: 2813 Sudderth Dr, Ruidoso, NM 88345

Hours of operation: Wednesday - Saturday 10AM - 5PM

Admission: Adults $5, Seniors (65 and up): $3, Children (16 and under): Free

Want to know Ruidoso's story? Linger a while in this beautifully restored 1920's house-turned-museum that takes you room-by-room through her history. From the time of the early settlers to the area to our current booming tourist Village, to see the progress of the area is truly a wonderful thing. 

Smokey Bear Historical Park

Address: 118 Smokey Bear Blvd. Capitan, NM 88316

Hours of operation: Tuesday – Sunday: 9:00AM to 4:30PM (last entry 4:15pm)

Admission: 

  • $6.00 – Adults (age 13+)
  • $4.00 – Seniors (age 62+)
  • $3.00 –  Youth (ages 7-12)
  • Free – Children (age 6 and under)
  • Free – School and Youth Groups
  • $15 – Tour bus

Established in 1976 in honor of the little orphaned bear cub with fire-burnt paws who would become the face of fire safety nation wide, the park offers fascinating exhibits and events for guests all in a breathtakingly scenic backdrop.

The Fort Stanton Museum 

Address: 104 Kit Carson Rd, Fort Stanton, NM 88323

Hours of operation: Thursday - Monday, 10AM - 4PM 

Admission: $7 for adults. Free for children 16 years and younger. NM residents with ID admitted free the first Sunday of every month.

In less than a 30-minute drive you will find yourself in Fort Stanton "Where history comes alive" this is a history buff's Nirvana!  Here you'll learn about the Lincoln County War involving Billy the Kid, the tuberculosis epidemic of the 1920s and so much more. You'll learn about little-known chapters of New Mexico history as you walk the 12 building parade grounds that appear much as they did in the mid 1800s!  Fort Stanton is not merely a visit, it's an experience. Make sure to plan your trip north during your Ruidoso stay!

Mescalero Apache Cultural Center and Museum

Address: 181 Chiricahua Plaza, Mescalero, NM 88340 

Hours of operation: Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 4:30PM 

Admission: Free

Cast your eyes on genuine artifacts, including: stone Apache tools, weapons, clothing and more. Guided tours can be provided upon request and arrangements for dance entertainment and group lectures are available under separate agreements.
